SPRING READING LIST

  • Another round-up from Baskforce member and resident #BookTok queen Nicole Pearce (IGTikTok). This month she's listing some effed up books she's read that aren't horror (recommended with a disclaimer).
    • You - by Caroline Kepnes: I know this came out a while ago but if you haven’t read it, do it. I could not put it down. Now what’s effed up about this is it’s a creepy stalker but it’s general population levels of effed like I wouldn’t recommend this to my grandmother, but I recommend it to everyone else.
    • When We Were Bright and Beautiful - by Jillian Medoff: Dialing up the level of messed up a bit. It's is about an über-rich family, and something‘s off with the family but you don’t really know what it is until you get towards the end.
    • Pretty Girls - by Karin Slaughter: If you like a dark thriller, this gets DARK, dark and graphic at times. So it centers around two sisters and then there’s a girl that has vanished and there’s also the killing of a middle-aged man like 20 years apart. Are they connected? You don’t really know.
    • All The Ugly and Wonderful Things - by Bryn Greenwood: Not for everyone! This book centers around a young girl with a tough home life and then a relationship that I don’t really have the words for. This book is uncomfortable. The author really throws you through an emotional roller coaster. People have very strong opinions about this book one way or the other but ultimately I do think it was incredible.
    • My Absolute Darling - by Gabriel Tallent: I think this is the most effed book I’ve ever read that I do recommend, but with heavy disclaimers. Not only is the subject matter beyond messed up, but the way in which certain scenes are written adds to the level of messed up-ness. It’s about a young girl with a very unstable home life and I’m still thinking about it, especially that ending, it’s a doozy.
