FALL READING LIST

Welcome to another round-up from Baskforce member and resident #BookTok queen Nicole Pearce (IG, TikTok). This month, she's sharing some of the books she'll be reading this fall.

  • Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
    This is the book I’m currently reading — it’s very short, and I’m almost done with it, so full thoughts are coming soon.
    Extra detail: It’s a quiet but powerful novella set in 1985 Ireland, following coal merchant Bill Furlong as he uncovers unsettling truths at a local convent.

  • Creepshow by Stephen King (graphic novel)
    Next up: Creepshow. I’ve never read a graphic novel before, and honestly if I wasn’t going through King’s work chronologically I might skip it. But I’m going into it with an open mind.
    Extra detail: This horror comic adapts five spooky tales from the 1982 film, combining King’s storytelling with Bernie Wrightson’s eerie illustrations.

  • Christine by Stephen King
    The next full-length King novel on my list. Normally, I wouldn’t read two of his books in one month, but I need to get to Pet Sematary after, so I’m making it work.
    Extra detail: Christine is about a seemingly possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury with a deadly will of its own. It’s one of King’s classic supernatural thrillers, blending teenage obsession, first love, and horror into a story about how power and evil can consume.

  • Pet Sematary by Stephen King
    After Christine, I’ll move into Pet Sematary. I want to finish it before I give birth — I won’t be able to handle that one in the early postpartum phase.
    Extra detail: Often considered one of King’s darkest works, it explores grief, resurrection, and the terrifying costs of tampering with death.

  • Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
    Last year I read Blue Sisters by Mellors and loved it, so I’ve been wanting to get to her debut for a while. I’ve heard the two are very different, but I’m excited to dive in.
    Extra detail: It’s about a whirlwind marriage between Cleo, a young British painter, and Frank, an older advertising exec, and how their impulsive decision ripples through the lives of everyone around them.

  • One of you (thank you Jessica J. in Miami!) recommended Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang, and I love it. It's just friends having fun, and a nice reprieve. She says, "in a world that is quite uncertain and scary, what is something that makes you laugh these days?" For me, that's this.
  • If you're pregnant (I am!)...or honestly just because, then you should check out these "jeans" from Rag & Bone. They're actually stretchy sweatpants that look absolutely like denim for days when you don't feel like putting on "real" pants and just want to be comfortable!
  • As a fitness class addict, I'm very excited that Tracy Anderson is opening a studio in Coral Gables in November! Can't wait to check it out. 
  • When September comes around I always find myself missing a NY fall wardrobe. Here are some of my affordable on trend picks for this season if I could transport myself there. This funnel neck jacket is chic and looks great with a dress, pants or paired with this also on trend Lacey silk skirt (40% off with code SHOPFALL). I love these plaid pants because they look so comfortable and would be so cute with a solid colored knit sweater or white tee and flats.  You cant go wrong with a good hobo bag. This one from Gap is so affordable and cool!

  • I'm a solid 5 years late to this whole sourdough trend, but after a few failed attempts, this starter from Joshua Weissman was perfect! Easy to follow, and great end result.
  • Task on HBO is off to a hot start! The acting is phenomenal, especially from Tom Pelphrey who played Ben Davis in Ozark. I also loved the Billy Joel documentary on HBO. What a legend. It's both a story of triumph and tragedy as it explores his voluminous archive of hit after hit, but also the demons he's battled - from alcohol, to relationships, to quitting writing music altogether.
  • This bag that allows you to wash your shoes in the washing machine has basically given me 5 new pairs of white shoes. Highly recommend! (Don't hate the yellow and blue either 🙌)
  • A few Miami spots I've really been loving that you should bookmark in case you are planning to make a trip this winter: Sunny's, Gramps Getaway, Cotoletta. And a reminder that mine and Brittany's favorite restaurant ever is Mandolin.
